Travel Writing & Photography

Welcome

Jim Manthorpe is a travel writer and photographer, specialising in landscapes, wildlife and adventure travel.

TRAVEL WRITING
Jim is the author of four guidebooks and has contributed to a further five, all for Trailblazer Publications. His articles and photographs have appeared in Wanderlust magazine, High Mountain Sports magazine, Spirit of Canada magazine and the Oban Times. He has also been an occasional speaker at the Daily Telegraph Adventure Travel Show. Jim has a diploma in sub-editing and design; he is available for proofreading and editing contracts as well as photographic commissions. Click on 'Services' for more details.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Jim was a double semi-finalist in the 2006 BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition, a semi-finalist in the 2007 competition and a quadruple semi-finalist and finalist in the 2008 competition. This follows on from similar success as a youth entrant in 1990. His photographs cover a range of subjects but the mountains and wildlife of the world's wilder regions, particularly the Himalayas and the Scottish Highlands, are his favourites. Jim works as a freelance photographer, covering everything from weddings to business websites. He provides many of the photographs for Trailblazer guidebooks.

Jim is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He lives in Knoydart, a remote peninsula on the west coast of Scotland, accessible only by boat or a two-day walk from the nearest road. When he's not busy with writing and photography projects, he works as a ranger for the Knoydart Foundation, the community organisation who own and manage the estate.
