HOME

Welcome to my website. I am a writer and photographer based in the Highlands of Scotland.

ABOUT ME
I have always loved the natural world and in particular the wild places, which is why I have ended up living in Knoydart, a remote peninsula on the west coast of Scotland, accessible only by boat or a two-day walk from the nearest road. I have been a freelance writer and photographer for over ten years, specialising in travel, wildlife and wild places. For just over five years I worked as a countryside ranger for the Knoydart Foundation, the community organisation who own and manage the Knoydart estate, before going full time as a freelancer in early 2011.

GUIDEBOOKS
I have written four guidebooks for Trailblazer Publications and updated many more. This work has seen me travel the world but I’ve also discovered just about every corner of the British Isles having updated six guidebooks on the national trails, also for Trailblazer. If you’d like to buy a book click on “Books” above.

ARTICLES
My articles have appeared in magazines including Wanderlust, Scotland Outdoors and High Mountain Sports among others.

EDITING & PROOFREADING
I’m also an editor and proofreader; I’ve worked at The Scotsman newspaper in Edinburgh and currently work from home for Trailblazer Publications and Gordon & MacPhail whisky distillers. I’m always happy to take on new clients. If you want to give me something to do, click on ‘Services’.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Photography has been a passion of mine since I first picked up a Praktica Nova 1 some time in the Eighties. I immediately began to combine this thirst for image-making with my love of wild places and wildlife, accumulating thousands of slides over the years before ‘going digital’ in 2005. At the age of 15 I reached the finals of the BBC Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition and have matched this three times as an adult in recent years. My photographs have appeared in a number of magazines and newspapers including the BBC News website, Press and Journal, The Scotsman, Wanderlust magazine, Scotland Outdoors magazine and Trailblazer guidebooks.

WILDLIFE FILMING
From about the age of ten I spent most of my evenings in the woods of Sussex filming badgers, foxes and deer with an old cine camera. The short wildlife documentaries I made went down a treat with audiences, even if they only consisted of my family. At the age of 14 I was on the other side of the camera, appearing as a child wildlife expert in three episodes of the Central TV production Wildabout for Children’s ITV. After studying for a degree in Environmental Science I spent a short spell working for Partridge Films in Bristol before concentrating on stills photography and writing. I’m now revitalising my interest in the moving image and have started to film the wildlife around my home in Knoydart. I’ll be posting the results on this website in due course so keep an eye out for them.
